Biggs – Best of a Brace

Andy Biggs grateful for Dave Church and Heather Ibbotson taking his duty for the last race of the year, presented them with an outstanding performance Saturday.

Culdrose forecast and recorded brilliant sunshine with 18-30 knots of a cool northerly causing a proportion of the dinghy fleet to reach for their duvets and hot water bottles.  Not so for Biggs – albeit fortified with tea cosy on his head, who’s arrival in Laser from Bar Beach without capsize in front of the clubhouse steadied the nervous and emboldened the foolhardy.

First off by Bar Buoy was Brooks snug in Laser radial cockpit and extra winter vest with the added comfort of at least double the minute and a half handicap that Biggs had seemingly gifted his quarry.

A  North Easterly course with the first mark at Bosahan did not produce the planeing reaches that the forecast suggested, nor had a rolling swell persisted on the beat to Toll from the previous day’s easterly.  Gusts galore to 3 points of the compass had racers scurrying about their decks and mainsheets as they wiggled hither and thither. Temporarily becalmed on the way to Trebah crews could relax before the next capricious gust tumbled down beyond Durgan’s forested cliffs.

Cuffing the mark at Trebah and another becalming left Biggs neck and neck with Brooks on the final run to Voose.  Avoiding the Gybe,  Brooks’ attempt to sail by Lee was doomed as Lee was nowhere to be found, leaving Andy to pip him quite rightly for first place.

Results: 1st in Class:  Andy Biggs: Laser, Stephen Brooks: Radial.
