A day of unrelenting rain was followed by a fine evening with a good westerly breeze. Race Officer Ken Hubbard chose a longish course with a variety of points of sail. The only two PY boats, Valkyrie and Kudu were still close together after rounding the Eastern mark, but Valkyrie, now gaining experience with a recently aquired spinnaker, proved too fast, and pulled away to win by nearly three minutes on handicap.

There were five yachts in the IRC fleet and both Jacobi and Big Purple needed a good result to keep alive their chances of winning the Mid Summer Series, with Gotcha already in a strong position.

A minute before the start Jetta’s crew went to unfurl the genoa, only to find eventually that a halliard had wound itself around the top of the forestay preventing the sail from setting. By the time that was sorted out the other four yachts were well away on the beat to the windward mark at Trebah. Gotcha rounded first, and spinnakers were set for the two mile run out into the Bay to the Eastern mark. Gotcha managed to stay ahead as Jacobi and Big Purple chased her, followed by Orijin and Jetta. The order remained the same for the rest of the race until Orijin passed Big Purple, with Gotcha finishing just five seconds ahead of Jacobi. Gotcha won on handicap a minute ahead of Big Purple, and an improved Orijin taking third place.

Gotcha still needs a first or second in next week’s race to be sure of a series victory, as either Jacobi or Big Purple could tie with Gotcha, by winning the final race. The rule is that in the event of a tie, the yacht with the better result in the most recent race wins.

Fifteen boats came out on the Helford River to enjoy a good breeze from the south west. Race Officer, John Jane, set a course taking the fleet out into Falmouth Bay, while the Gaffers followed a shorter triangular course. In the PY section of the race Jinjy was first of the five yachts to finish, but Verity proved to be the winner on handicap.

In the IRC section the order at the first mark at Voose was Jacobi, Gotcha, Orijin and Jetta. Jetta passed Orijin briefly on the spinnaker leg out to Eastern, only to be repassed when Orijin hoisted her spinnaker. The order then stayed the same to the finish, but it was quite a close race when the handicaps were applied with all of the IRC boats finishing within three minutes of each other. Gotcha was the winner from Jacobi with Jetta in third place.

There were six boats racing with the Gaffers: Dragonfly (Mike Maguire), Yseult (Mark), Roxanne (James Lyle), Tracey (Phil Reed), Cicely (John Green) and Fiona Beale.

Big Purple, Jacobi and Gotcha! at 1840 heading out to Eastern

The four PY boats sailed an uneventful race with long spinnaker legs to Eastern and Rosemullion. Ray Hosking on Jackpot recorded his first win of the season, beating Jinjy by 35 seconds on handicap.

On a beating start the five IRC yachts arrived at the Turning mark with Jacobi rounding first, followed by Gotcha, Big Purple, and Orijin with Jetta in last place. After a considerable struggle with her spinnaker, Jetta managed to hoist it and get it filling. On the run out to Eastern Jetta overhauled three of the four boats ahead, to round the leeward mark only two boats lengths behind the leader, Jacobi. Big Purple and Orijin got past Jetta on the beat back to the Central mark, in the River, with Gotcha last to arrive. The fleet then hoisted spinnakers to port, all except Jetta, who hoisted to starboard and again had a problem, this time with the tack, putting her once more to the back of the fleet.

The order did not change on the long spinnaker run out to the Rosemullion mark, but Orijin got the spinnaker wrapped around her forestay and lost time sorting out the problem, allowing Jetta to get ahead of her. The beat back to the Dennis mark saw Jacobi round first followed by Big Purple and Gotcha. Jacobi then sailed on in clear air to the finish line at Trebah, but Big Purple was not far behind and had a comfortable win on handicap by over one minute, with Jacobi in second place, just four seconds ahead of Gotcha.

Four boats took part in the Gaffers’s race with Roxanne coming in first, followed by Glen, then John Green and Sea Biscuit.

PY and IRC results from Terry Pascoe

Wednesday 8th July was a glorious evening with 10 – 14 knots of Westerly breeze, a perfect race night for the 10 boat fleet in race 2 of the Helford River Sailing Club Summer series.

Race officer Phil Samuel set a good course that would see the yachts beat up to Durgan Beach before heading out to Eastern mark some 2 miles downwind, before a long beat back against the wind to Shag of Mawnan Shear, across to Gew and Dennis head and then back to the middle of the rive for the finish.

The PY yachts got off to a clean start with Lynda Filmer in Jinjy opting for the port end of the line and hugging the south bank. The boats that favoured the starboard end appeared to make better progress at first but had less wind and it was the port’enders that faired better as the fleet split soon after the start.

In the IRC start it was Big Purple that took the chances opting to start on Port tack at the port end of the line. It looked good for a short while passing cleanly ahead of Jetta until meeting ~Gotcha that has also made a good start mid way down the line with speed, causing Purple to tack. Jacobi and Orijin opted for the starboard end, but in much less wind pressure.

The boats tacked their way up the river towards Trebah beach, Jacobi made a close tack under Orijin when she was caught on starboard. Purple and Gotcha stayed under the south bank and kept in better pressure, Jetta tacked off towards the North bank and lost out a little.

At the Windward mark, Jacobi just slipped inside Gotcha to round first, Gotcha a few yards behind followed by Purple, Jetta and Orijin. Jacobi sailed high to protect her wind, Gotcha dipped down and hoisted her spinnaker and started to pull away. Jacobi hoisted her spinnaker but it was upside down ! and so lost a huge amount of time sending her to the back of the fleet.

Big Purple and Jetta opted for the South bank, a move that quickly paid off as they caught more wind and soon caught up with Gotcha. Jetta eventually passed Gotcha near Nare point and took the early lead on the leg down to Eastern.

At Eastern Mark it was neck and neck between Jetta and Gotcha, with Big Purple sailing a good leg to hold 3rd. Jetta dropped her spinnaker first allowing Gotcha to sneak ahead by a boat length, which gave her a clear rounding of the mark ahead and so clear wind for the beat back to the river to Shag.

Jetta and Gotcha made good of the freshening breeze and headed back towards the river, with Gotcha managing to pull out a bit of ground. As they entered the river Jacobi had caught up with the two leading boats and was looking like being a threat. A difference of tactics came in as Jetta and Gotcha held out from Mawnan Shear opting to stay in more pressure in the river and ignore the lift being given the boats further in. The moved paid off and Gotcha rounded first with a 100 yard lead over Jetta with Jacobi 3rd.

Jetta again made good down wind and caught up with Gotcha, closing the gap to 50 yards at Dennis mark before the yachts had their final beat back to the middle of the river to finish.

Gotcha tacked out for clean air and then back to hook into the pressure gain that was favoring the south side, Jetta followed suit and the two boats sailed home for a comfortable finish, with Gotcha winning by over a minute, Jetta 2nd, Jacobi finished 3rd on the water but Big Purple had sailed a solid and trouble free race to beat her on corrected time and so took 3rd position for a podium finish.

The PY yachts sailed the same course and it was great to see Phil Badger out with the fleet sailing his Sunbeam 2 miles out around Eastern buoy. Lynda Filmer capitalised on her good start to take the win with Roger McDonald 2nd sailing Amanzimtoti and Ray Hoskins Jackpot 3rd.

Jetta off to Eastern at 18:26

Jetta off to Eastern at 18:26

Although there was not much wind on the moorings in the River, reports of good wind in Falmouth Bay made skippers cautious when deciding which sails to use. The IRC fleet of five was reduced to two boats with Jacobi and Orijin away in Plymouth competing in the J Cup. However the PY section was joined by Mike Lowe, skippering White Squall, and there was also a good turnout by the Gaffers. With a breeze from the South, Dave Berryman, assisted by Beccy Kestin, started the IRC and PY boats together, with Voose as the windward mark. Big Purple rounded first, closely followed by Jetta, and spinnakers were hoisted for the long run out to the Eastern mark. When they were off Nare Point Jetta’s crew lowered the spinnaker sooner than Big Purple and seemed to gain an advantage, leading the fleet around the Eastern mark. Big Purple stayed in touch as Jetta headed off towards the Rosemullion mark, only to find that it had been moved North for Falmouth Week. After locating Rosemullion Jetta and Big Purple had the long fetch back to the Dennis mark. It was only when Jetta opted for the more Easterly route for the short spinnaker run to the Shag mark that she gained an advantage, opening up a gap as Big Purple struggled in light winds after rounding Dennis. Jetta finished first but won by only ten seconds from Big Purple on corrected time. Chris Symes and the crew of Valkyrie made good use of their spinnaker in the PY section, finishing over four minutes ahead of Kudu on the line, which was enough for Valkyrie to win by 23 seconds on corrected time. It was good to see White Squall joining the racing for the first time this season with new skipper Mike Lowe. White Squall was third over the finish line, even without using a spinnaker, but Jackpot gained third place on corrected time. There was also a good showing by the Gaffers and details of their race will be added when available.
