With the course shortened to the triangle Biggs and Philpott seemingly held hands at the finish 4 minute behind the Solo and Emily Broad managing to complete the course ahead of a valiant attempt by a tandem of Hoskens.Light air specialist Adam Mason left the fleet far behind in real and corrected time Thursday. Without apparent sense of urgency the racers sailing wind against tide meandered through the Narrows towards Trebah. Race Officer McD with plenty of time to lay a Triangle / Sausage course and ponder the upcoming RS400 nationals Torquay 8th -12th September could only persuade his charges to start 25 minutes late. It was quite apparent the only custom for Paul Greensmith in safety would be the big tow home as the wind failed all except the Solo.Light Airs Grace Adam Mason

A Hot Line
Starting in the middle of the river between Bosahan and Durgan HRSC’s PY fleet set of on Thursday evening’s NW course into variously a W-NW moderate breeze and a perfect flooding tide. Just back from an Italian job, a thirsty McD executed a perfect manoeuvre to get to the head of the Bosahan cream tea queue; except this was race night and the rest of the fleet had gone to Trebah, the short way.
Phil Philpott’s Blaze with its 125sq ft Halo was the first to elegantly round Trebah before the gentle run out to the Gew. Luring no one with him, McD’s Laser rejoined the main peloton at the rear, chattily working his way through its congenial ranks to within 30 seconds of Andy Biggs’ Laser, himself 30 exhausting seconds behind the understated gentleman on the Blaze.
Out racing for the first time this season, Andrew Hosking anticipating a forecast gentle breeze soloed his immaculate Laser 2 against the refurbished Radial rig of his daughter Beks. Both found themselves performing limbo dance like as the shifty gusts on the beat over powered their sails; the more supple Beks finally chalking up a good two minutes ahead of her father.
Phil Samuel’s Solo and Beccy Kestin’s Radial stuck glue like to the Peloton the entire race; their dogged persistence & skilful navigation paid off at the final accounting – Beccy piping the Solo for first by 3 small seconds, and the Blaze with Bronze a further minute behind.

McDonald in the Pink
Thursdays light winds suited the largest sail area & lightest of crews. With no skiffs on the Helford, the next best for these conditions is undoubtedly the RS400 with capacious spinnaker. Especially in Neon Pink and crew Roger McDonald & Beccy Kestin in the peak of condition.
The Laser fleet were first of from the Helford Pursuit start line in front of the Club House. The larger full rigs whittling away the minute and a half handicap advantage of the radials on the slow drift to the mouth of the river under Toll.
Next of the double handers with Brooks playing it safe without deploying kite with daughter Zoe on her first race in Laser II. By the time the lasers were on the beat back up stream the RS400’s set forth all sails flying, catching leading Laser Andy Biggs on the run back down river from Voose rocks.
The lightest of airs were found under Trebah and again by Voose smothering the performance of the Lasers. Faced with early victualing a cold and hungry teenager or completing another drift to rivers mouth Brooks chose wisely. That left Phil Philpott and Carrie Hoskins to make it back to shore behind race leader McDonald, with Messer’s Greensmith and Brandreth towing a grateful laser fleet home before last orders.

Perfect Day
Helford had tempted out all who could float, swim, or bask in brilliant sunshine. Race officer Roger McDonald conjured sufficient easterly wind on a flood tide for two gentle average lap races of Bosahan. By the time that Andy & Karen Biggs’ N12 had rounded the Windward Mark on the first leg the days finishing order was established – save for the battle for 2nd and 3rd between the Hosken and Hosking farming families.

Susannah May Memorial Cup
A gentle breeze on Sunday encouraged near 50 sailors out to what has become since the mid 70’s a popular if slightly bonkers friendly on Helford’s dinghy racing calendar. One of the founding families of HRSC – the May’s – with friends distant and of Cornwall relish their summers on and around the Helford. What better way to celebrate lives remembered and acquaintances renewed than a joust – sponsored by Fido May – between the cognisant and novice, native and holidaymaker, exuberant and venerable.
It was to Captain Dinghies Andy & Karen Biggs that the enviable duty of maestro & recorder fell. Orchestrating a discordant bunch aged 12 to 63 sailing anything from tiny Optimists to dreadnaught RS800’s, would require a degree of flexibility hitherto unavailable within the Rules of Racing.
For the first race, those that turned left at the Pin end and got in front, all appeared normal. Behind a cacophony of sound heralded the crunch of wood against fibreglass all to the chorus of “room, water, starboard, oh dear – we (the RS800) just boarded the Wayfarer” Had the RS800 owner known the owner of the Wayfarer is possessed of 3 full sized bronze cannon on his lawn with a clear view of the river, he might have thought a little more carefully about this manoeuvre.
Elsewhere Nell Ruscombe- King’s crew had wrapped himself around the yellow coarse mark whilst still attached to the Feva – and for this and other daft displays was awarded best comedic capsize. Nell’s son Harvey with a good dose of his mothers capsize gene was awarded most capsizes with five of the very best.
A fleet of Wayfarers swallowed up the wind for those left behind – but not before Imperials & South Ken’s finest: Rob McPherson sailed a blinder for a 2nd over the visitors Lucy Gordon and son Ned’s 3rd. Phil Samuel’s protracted nuptials with his Solo found him in raptures first on this short course.
In the second race with a little more breeze, the big sails could go a little faster pulling Roger McDonald and Beccy Kestin in the RS600 whilst avoiding the embraces of a Wayfarer and Albacore to 2nd Phil Samuel had to be content with a third – despite an encouraging nudge forward by a hugely apologetic Laser to his rear. Young Sam Philpott – 12 – stormed though on his Laser 4.7 to take first over arch rival youth sailor Ollie Chamberlain who’d otherwise sailed a snorter before taking an early bath in a gust before Central.
It was left to Commodore Julian Samuel to thank the all those supporting the fleet on the day, the Mays for their brand of Mayhem, and in absentia Fido May for having sponsored and encouraged this fun race for the last 40 years.

Race 1st Phil Samuel, 2nd Rob McPherson, 3rd Lucy Gordon & son Ned
