Sunday 21st April – Spring Weekend Series SW 4-5 Pursuit SW 3pm
Bend it like Beccy
A winter spent in contemplation & practice of Yoga saw Beccy Kestin perform impossible & yet winning contortions about her Laser racer. Sailing a Laser’s hull flat wins races in a stiff breeze. There were gusts aplenty Sunday for an 80 minute isometric workout on HRSC’s first outing of the year.
2012 HRSC Laser champion Emily Broad, set off with Beccy at the head of a Pursuit fleet, jostled for and maintained their lead until the final moments of the race. Brooks in Radial capitalised on planning gusts & closed to a minute on the first run to Toll – but that was as close as he got and was caught by Andy Biggs in Laser full rig on the second run.
It was a delight to see father and daughter team Andrew and Beks Hosking in a pristine Laser II risking spinnaker on their first sortie together. A wisely reefed mainsail meant Beks was not able to stay as warm as the monosail racers on the beats in horizontal rain. A trapeze harness will eventually see Beks if not singing, swinging in the rain. Many’s a parent and child crew have graduated from a Laser II and the club looks forward to racing 3 together this year.
Andy Biggs as Helford’s new Captain Dinghies was delighted to see his fleet escorted on their return by elder laser racers Roger McDonald, & Captain Yachts: Chris Symes, with Carol Lawrence & Captain Juniors: Dom Brandreth on safety.
Results: 1st Beccy Kestin, 2nd Andy Biggs, 3rd Emma Broad
