Sunday 9th June 4pm Spring Weekend Series Easterly 2-1 Linestart W/L
EAST U C Windward – Leeward
Heavy wind sailors make light of thin breezes
Phil Philpott & Carrie Hoskins showed their ability in light airs to make full use of the RS400’s massive sail area and win by avoiding the holes in the wind. More or less in order of sail size the fleet finished in 2 laps versus the planned 4 in fading airs near 30 minutes separating the front and rear of the fleet.
Anton Chamberlain was almost in the points but a flooding tide and lack of oars delayed the arrival of the Comet & Anton’s two children crewing until after the race had started. It was a pleasure to see the Broad family manning the Committee, Safety, and two racing dinghies – Emily in radial and Matt and Harry in the RS200.
Steve Kestin suggested that for the conditions it was very unlikely the slower boats would make headway against the RS400’s. Nevertheless it must be a strange position for Tom Lake to find himself in lucky 7th given his continuing success in the 707’s with Swordfish.
