Dinghy Racing: October 13th

Saturday 13th October Autumn Weekend Series     W- NW 2-5 Pursuit NW 16:00hrs

Phil’s Super Saturday

Phil Philpott knows how to make the most of the remaining sailing on the Helford before the lights switch of at the end of the month. Saturday 707 keel boat racing AM and a PM 1st place in dinghies.

Black clouds in big skies bring gusts a plenty.  Culdrose recorded NW13-25 knots at 4pm. Under the Clubhouse a gentle southerly wafted a fleet of Solos and Lasers out towards a Westerly breeze on the start line.  Four minutes after the Solos, pursuing Lasers set off on the scenic run out to the Gew aided by a moderate W – S Westerly along the South shore.  With the gusts not reaching planeing speed it was still the Solos of Philpott and Mason leading at the gybe round Gew.

Unable to point as high as the Solos on the beat to Trebah, Biggs & Brooks would need to strenuously hike out to sail flat & hence as fast as possible.  There was plenty of opportunity for Laser and Solo to take advantage of capricious W-NW gusts and for the Lasers to release an audible sigh of physical relief at each tack.   Weighted down by mussels and weed, the mark at Trebah could just be seen in time near Garth Weaver in Safety for the beat to Voose.

In the second half using his weight advantage to the full Phil maintained his lead only seriously being threatened by Biggs tacking earlier at Gew on the beat to Central.  With a pressing engagement Garth handed over to Roger McD – disturbed from his rope harvest of sweet first season mussels at Central – for the long tug home in the falling tide and light airs at Voose.  A perfect days sailing on the Helford.

Results: Phil Philpott 1, Andy Biggs 2, Adam Mason 3.
