Yacht racing

Our intention to have informal “practice races” on Wednesday evenings from 14 April with a regatta on Sunday 2 May to kick things off.

Here’s a summary of the yacht racing calendar this year:

The Spring Series starts on 05/04/21for 5 weeks (1 or 2 races per evening)The Summer Series starts 16/06/21 for 7 weeksL’Aber Wrac’h Race is planned for 25/06/21Falmouth week is 08/08/21Autumn series Starts  18/08/21 with the season finishing in late September

To get involved as skipper or crew head over the HRSC Keelboats Facebook page. The community there is friendly and active, with new sailors welcome. If you have any questions please talk to Alex ([email protected]).

2019 was our 4th season racing Juno in the Cornwall Offshore Group Series.

Race 3

A breezy easterly, sometimes a bit NE. Mild easterly swell with sets of waves coming every 10 mins or so. I didn’t take any sailing photos, so this pic was from the journey home. If anyone has any photos to share please either email me or post them on the Facebook group.

Race 2

A generally steady northerly, although a hole in the wind appeared at Turning Mark just as Morgawr got there (or at least that’s their excuse and they’re sticking to it). Great to see two guest crew on Morgawr – as part of an expended Push The Boat Out programme.

Mid Summer Series

To allow continuity for the 707 One Design racing series and to encourage new PY boats to race I have created a Combined Fleet super-series. We will keep the existing One Design series, but we’ll also have a Combined Fleet series that allows PY boats to race 707s (and each other) using the TCC / IRC handicapping system.

The TCC ratings were taken from various sources found online. Handicap can and will be updated over time as ratings become more accurate.

Race 1

A breezy start to the Mid Summer series. Avocet had issues with an overpowered kite causing broaching and loss of position, but a lift on the last leg allowed them to get back past Dragun. Morgawr were two-handed and chose to go white sails only.

The results are in, the numbers have been crunched and the winners are…

Early Summer Series (One Design): Dragun
Early Summer Series (PY): Kari II

In the final race of the series (Race 6) Dragun pipped Avocet for the win – tying the series on 9 points each (with discards). But with more first places Dragun takes the series on the tie-breaker (see ISAF Appendix A8.1 for more info). And after joining the series late Kari II takes the PY title. Well done all.

Due to family commitments and PTBO work I’ve been a bit slow getting the results out for the last two weeks. Here are the combined results for 16 and 23 May. Note, due to my poor sailing instructions I have had to split the results by fleet, creating two parallel race series. I will update the instructions for the Mid-Summer Series so that we the PY fleet can race against the 707s. Dom.

Racing tonight was a little problematic with a forecast of 20 plus mph winds and rain, the start line at central seemed to be the least windy place on the river. The course Committee start, Gew, Voose then back to Committee ×2, we decided to shorten the course to one lap, at the finish the wind picked up to the predicted 20mph and it rained, but what an exciting although damp journey back to the moorings.
It was great to have the first PY entrant in tonights race a Sadler 26 owned and helmed by Martin Fenton, crewed by Kitty Brogden and Sam Adams. See you next week. Chris Hosken, Rear Commodore Sailing.

Perfect sailing weather. Looked like it might be too breezy though so 3/4 boats elected not to fly their kites. Dragun was brave and used their spinnaker to stretch ahead on the first downwind leg. Closer racing between the 3 remaining boats. A fight for the line between Avocet and Mawgawr with Avocet strongly defending their on-starboard line. Great racing.

Hi Everyone

I’ve taken over as Captain Yachts this year. My aim for the next three years is to:

Make yachting as easy and enjoyable as possible for all
Introduce more dinghy sailors and social members to yacht racing
Entice more boats onto the water and boost racing on Wednesday nights
Help sociable sailors to communicate and cruise in company

I write this towards the end of October and almost all of us have got our boats off their moorings, out of the water and safely tucked away in barns and boatyards for the winter. The nights are closing in and the season is almost over.

Agenda: To review 2015 yacht racing season and discuss plans to attract more yachts to participate in racing and cruising in 2016

NG. voiced the general feeling that it was a great shame that the fleet racing had fallen away from around ten 707s and some PY yachts on each start line in 2013 and 14 to only half that number of 707s and no PY yachts last year, despite very good close racing.

NG said that he had been approached by a few PY yacht owners saying that they wished to be included and felt left out. He proposed that we try to include PY yachts by having a joint 707 and PY start.
There were some objections but NG asked that we try that for the first series and see if PY yachts do actually want to race.

It was generally agreed that we must try to encourage more participation and include PY yachts.

NG presented some ideas that had been sent to him by Tom Smith and also thanked Phil Badger for sending some ideas all of which were discussed.

It was agreed that:-

Yacht owners should be contacted to ask what support and encouragement they would like and what type of racing. NG to contact owners.
Occasional Cruise/Races to be organised, also cruises in company. NG, PS and CD to take forward.
Courses to be varied sometimes two short races other times one longer at discretion of the OOD.
The race night should remain on Wednesday for the coming season at least.
Juniors should be encouraged to join the 707 racing.
CD to talk to Nick Allsop, Capt Juniors, to identify likely elder juniors. PS to talk to Dominic and Ian Lawrence to ask if their boys might be interested.
NG and PS to consider offering Avocet as a ‘junior boat’ skippered by one of them with junior helm and crew.
PB also volunteered to skipper a junior boat if necessary.
VHF sets to be used by all racers on channel 72 for safety reasons and also to enable self starts if no OOD was available.
OODs should be encouraged to attend but if that meant a boat not sailing on that evening then self start should be agreed.
Rule infringements should be owned up to on the water and the appropriate 360 or 720 penalty taken. However protests can be a learning exercise and should not be discouraged. They should be conducted as an opportunity to talk through the rules and issues.
